Celebrating 21 Years of Inspiring Environmental Education

On  World Environmental Education Day, 26 January 2025, we’re taking a moment to celebrate 21 incredible years of NRF-SAEON’s Science Engagement Programme.

Since its inception (in January 2004), this programme has been a key pillar of NRF-SAEON. We’ve helped learners, educators, and communities gain a deeper understanding of the long-term and large-scale ecological processes that shape our world.

One of the defining features of the programme has been its emphasis on giving learners the opportunity to step into the role of scientists, through science camps. Through fieldwork, the use of technology and the development of 21st-century skills we have enriched how science is taught and learned. From workshops and citizen science projects to innovative classroom tools, our approach has sparked curiosity and a love for science and a deeper connection to our environment.

As we mark this milestone, we want to acknowledge everyone who has been part of this journey – the learners, teachers, researchers, and collaborators who have helped make it possible. Here’s to 21 years of environmental education, and to the many more to come!
